The Hell and Backs
The best rock ’n’ roll band you never heard of.
Forged in flames during the Okanagan Mountain fire of 2003, an evacuated, uncertain summer brought four musicians together and gave them a band with a purpose.
While the hills around Kelowna, B.C. burned, four guys with nowhere to be and plenty to say turned the chaos into song. Their sound was punk’s snarling speed, rockabilly’s slick swagger, and classic rock’s chest-rattling punch, all crammed into one amp-scorching rebellion. No scene would claim them, so they built their own.
Then came the chapter every great band from that era shares. The gigs stopped, the amps went cold, and life moved on. The songs stayed behind, buried in battered tapes and forgotten hard drives, waiting.
Now they’re back. The Essential Remasters is 33 songs pulled from the band’s original run, cleaned up but never scrubbed. These aren’t songs recreated years later or polished into something they were never meant to be. You can hear the room. You can hear the attitude. Two guitars pushing against each other, bass driving underneath, hard hitting drums, and vocals delivered with the kind of conviction that doesn’t require permission. They weren’t chasing perfection. They were chasing impact.
This is a time capsule from before every show was filmed with cell phones and every band had a digital footprint. If you know, you know. If you were there, you were a witness. If you weren’t, press play and turn it up.
